gmercer’s grapevine

...hear about what's going on with me through my grapevine.

Road trip to get Amy's ring...and maybe a TV...

A long story short, I decided to buy Amy's ring from a company in the United States.  To avoid the hassle of brokerage and additional fees, we drove down to Buffalo to pick up the ring.

I took a "before" (sans ring) photo to kick off our trip, and then of course pulled into the first Tim's we came across.

There's a place on Highway #6 that has a bunch of dinosaurs and characters out front, so we thought we'd take a quick photo break.

The line up to use the woman's bathroom was so long at one of the rest stops, that there were women walking in and using the men's bathroom.

Amy had a purse to exchange at the Coach outlet store in Niagara Falls, and as our luck would have it, they had a big sale Saturday.  So we waited forty-five minutes in line, just to get into the store...and once we were in, of course we had to look around.

I thought I'd drop into the Levi's jeans outlet and grab a couple pairs of jeans.  They had sale signs all over the place.  One of the sales reps was helping me find my size when I asked, "so this whole wall is on sale?" ... "yes, but not for your size".  WTF! OK, so I could lose a few pounds, but I'm not Fat Albert sized (depending on the style, I wear 38" or 40").

Amy tore into the package as soon as we picked it up from Fedex.  Inside the first box, was another box.  Inside that box, was a padded envelope.  Inside the envelope, was another box.  Inside that box, was a wooden box...and finally, inside the wooden box was her ring.

Since we were already half way there, we figured we'd drive down to Ohio and buy a TV (I know it's crazy, but Sony was selling a TV for $1,000 with a free PS3 that sells for $2,000 in Canada).  We figured we'd sell the PS3 and end up with a $2,000 TV for $700.  So, they sold out, but they are going to ship it to us instead.

Even though we didn't get the TV, we were happy to find a great restaurant.  The Cheesecake Factory is now on our list of restaurants to keep an eye out for.  All the food was great...I mean, how can any place go wrong with a page and a half of different cheesecake options?

Happy Thanksgiving to our southern friends...

I have to admit, I like what the Americans have done with their Thanksgiving.

Put the holiday on a Thursday, eating, drinking,
football/hockey...make Friday basically optional for most people so
that they can go shopping for crazy deals. I think that if we did
that here, I might do the Christmas shopping on the Friday instead of
Christmas eve (who am I kidding, I'd still wait ;) ).

I've never been so proud of a poop...

Isabelle has been going pee-pee on the potty pretty regularly for a little over a week now (every 15 minutes it seems, lol), but today was the first day she went poop in the potty.  I never thought I'd be proud of a poop, but I guess that's what being a parent does to you.

Another note on parenting:
No matter how much your two year old begs for it, never squirt water into their mouth with your sports water bottle...unless you want to get it back, plus everything they had for dinner all over your shirt.  "...it's ok Daddy...just don't make me throw up again."

"I spy with my little eye, something that is...chicken"

We went to Swiss Chalet for dinner tonight.  As we were sitting there, Isabelle starts looking around as she says, "I spy with my little eye, something that is...chicken" (LOL).

Isabelle gives two thumbs up to the new Japanese restaurant near our house (Sushi Nara).

We tried out Sushi Nara tonight (374 Erb Street West, Waterloo), and although it's not Samura, it's worth another visit.  The prices weren't too bad and the food was good.  The spicy tuna roll was probably my favourite tonight.  It was funny, the waitress came by to see if we had decided what to get, and Isabelle spoke right up and said, "uhm, I'll have a burger please" (LMAO).

We stopped by Walmart after dinner and Isabelle went for a ride with Mickey Mouse.

Earlier in the week we raked some of the leaves up (a lot more to go).

Hey RIM employees...any of you guys have any suggestions?

(download)

My 8310 curve died this morning, so I went and picked up a new 8900. I'm moving my stuff over and playing with a couple new features (including the video camera). If you watch the video, look at the fan...10 o'clock. There is what looks like a dead pixel. It doesn't appear in pictures, just while using the video camera (both on my screen and in the video itself).

Anyone have any idea how to fix it? Should I just take it back?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

======================== update ========================

I took my phone back and got a new one.  It seems a bit extreme to get the phone replaced due to a dead pixel that only shows up while using the video camera, but it bothered me too much to know that I bought something brand new and it had an issue (no matter how small) from day one.

Eligible for an upgrade this month...and my BlackBerry stopped charging yesterday.

Tried new batteries, different cables and on different computers. I'm thinking about picking up the 8900 Curve today.
